22-Floor Cisco Network Deployment for International Law Firm

London Skyline Early Morning Before Data Centre Installation

22-Floor Cisco Network Deployment for International Law Firm

When a major international law firm with over 20 offices worldwide decided to relocate their London headquarters to a brand new skyscraper, they needed a partner who could handle the full deployment of network infrastructure across 22 floors — on time, on spec, and in a building that was still an active construction site.

The Challenge

The firm was moving from an existing London high-rise to a newly built skyscraper, occupying the top 22 floors. The project required the deployment of 20 Cisco Catalyst 9400 series Intermediate Distribution Frames (IDFs) — each one needing to be unboxed, physically installed, wired, configured, and loaded with software tailored to the client’s specific requirements.

This was not a simple equipment swap. The Catalyst 9400 series is a high-performance modular switching platform designed for enterprise-grade networks. Each unit required careful handling, precise installation, and detailed configuration work before going live.

To make matters more complex, the building’s original fit-out contractor went into administration in September 2024. This caused significant delays to the overall construction programme and forced the project timeline to be restructured around the new contractor’s schedule.

DataMove Engineer Loads Cisco Config Files at Client Request

Our Approach

DataMove deployed a team of accredited engineers to work on-site across three stages of deployment over a four-week period. Given that the building was still an active construction site for much of the project, our team needed the correct PPE, site accreditations and materials to operate safely alongside other contractors.

The scope of work included:

  • Unboxing and physical installation of 20 Cisco Catalyst 9400 series IDFs across 22 floors

  • Full structured cabling and wiring to connect each IDF to the building’s network backbone

  • Software deployment, updates and configuration adjusted to the client’s specific network requirements

  • Two additional Ekahau wireless site surveys following client-requested changes to wireless access point placement

  • Multiple reworks to WAP positioning based on evolving client specifications as the floor layouts were finalised

Flexibility was critical throughout. The original contractor’s administration meant the project timeline shifted repeatedly, and the client made several changes to their wireless network design as the building fit-out progressed. Our team adapted to each change without compromising the overall delivery schedule.

The Outcome

Despite the disruption caused by the original contractor going into administration and multiple client-driven design changes, DataMove completed the full deployment on the adjusted schedule. All 20 IDFs were installed, configured and live across 22 floors when the firm moved into their new headquarters.

The project demonstrated DataMove’s ability to operate in challenging environments — working on an active construction site, adapting to shifting timelines, and managing scope changes — while still delivering a fully functional enterprise network infrastructure on time.

Technical Implementation

Having already installed and configured over £6m worth of enterprise-grade Cisco connectivity infrastructure, including strategic access point deployment, our certified wireless engineers conducted the critical final verification phase. This process validated that client-specified access point locations would deliver optimal RF coverage across entire floor areas while meeting stringent security and performance requirements for the legal environment.

Trusted by 40% of Fortune 500 companies, Ekahau provided the ideal solution for this deployment. Our technical team employed active and passive survey methodologies, collecting comprehensive data on signal strength, coverage, interference patterns, and network capacity across all critical parameters.

Professional Survey Methodology

Our discreet survey teams operated with minimal disruption to ongoing activities, conducting assessments with methodical precision in the sensitive corporate environment. Using the Sidekick 2’s dual Wi-Fi radio configuration, engineers scanned comprehensively across 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands with 8-hour battery life ensuring continuous operation.

The team maintained complete discretion while operating unobtrusively within the active environment, preserving sensitive client information and operational security protocols throughout the assessment process.

Survey Results and Analysis

Due to construction delays, some floors remained incomplete during initial surveys; however, comprehensive reports generated through Ekahau AI Pro’s advanced 3D capacity and coverage estimation capabilities delivered highly promising results. These analyses showcased exemplary collaboration from initial placement design through final validation surveys.

Ekahau AI Survey Pro’s map visualisation capabilities enabled detailed predictive planning off-site before on-site validation. The resulting heatmaps and reports provided actionable insights and performance guarantees for the critical wireless infrastructure investment.

Future Validation

Further targeted surveys are scheduled for two floors once construction completes, as these contain specialised heavy-duty interior installations which may impact RF propagation characteristics. Additional validation will ensure consistent coverage performance across these challenging environments.

This deployment demonstrated the exceptional capabilities of DataMove’s team combined with the Ekahau AI Pro solution, ensuring exemplary wireless connectivity across all operational sites. Our professional wireless surveys provide comprehensive facility assessment, coverage optimization, and interference analysis, delivering technical excellence for mission-critical legal operations.

Case Study: Network Refresh and Cabinet Tidy

Project Overview: Supporting a Multinational IT Services Company

DataMove recently assisted a multinational IT services company with network refreshes and cabinet tidies/cable management on behalf of one of their clients in four European locations.

Challenges Faced: Legacy Equipment and Disorganised Infrastructure

Due to years of mixed networking strategy and staff changes, the network cabinets were in poor condition with a mish-mash of different equipment – some in use and some long since retired. The cabinets themselves were of a late 90s vintage but due to layout and sheer quantity of copper still in use these were here to stay.

Deployment Strategy: Efficient Execution Across Multiple Sites

We deployed a three man crew to Luxembourg, Frankfurt, Prague and Central London strictly out of hours and over weekend shifts to pull out 75% of the infrastructure in place and renew with Arista core and user switches as well as wireless access points followed by an Ekahau wireless survey.

Sustainable Disposal: Responsible Recycling of Outdated Equipment

Following successful completion, DataMove also organised accredited recycling services with our partners in Europe to safely dispose of the aged equipment.

Server equipment being relocated from Yorkshire to Gibraltar for online gaming operator

Online Gaming Giant – Yorkshire to Gilbratar Move

DataMove team en-route through France during online gaming server relocation from Yorkshire to Gibraltar

Online Gaming Giant - Yorkshire to Gilbratar Move

1. Gibraltar, as well as Cyprus, Malta and Sweden are popular hosting destinations for the worlds leading online gaming and sports betting companies. DataMove has worked on behalf of the biggest sports-betting companies globally in all of these locations.

2. DataMove were asked to move £250,000 worth of vital processing servers and associated equipment from two sites – Harrogate and Newport in the UK – to GibTel in Gibraltar – the British Overseas Territory.

Being high value and not to mention data sensitive equipment, the client required a dedicated van service – door to door and full rack, stack and patch both ends.

3. Project Manager Alex established a clear plan and immediately lodged an import record for the manifested goods with HM Customs Gibraltar with our preferred partner on the ground in Gib.

Prepayment of import taxes is important so as not to delay shipments into Gibraltar. Alex assigned two engineers and one of our euro spec Sprinters to carry out the work door to door in four days.

T1 documents were logged with HMRC and all paperwork’s were in place. This was a bit easier before Brexit but nonetheless standard for us now – we carry out cross border shipments weekly. Before or after Brexit, entry into Gibraltar has always been entertaining.

4. The Team carried out a full audit and port map at point of de-rack as these devices would have different elevations at the destination site. Between the two sites, there were 28 HP DL360 G10 devices and a handful of networking devices also being transported to the destination.

After a night stop at a secure compound near Folkestone, the team collected documentation near Ashford and boarded the tunnel for France. Gibraltar is a two to three day drive.

A few days later… cleared customs at La Línea de la Concepción and into Gibraltar. A relatively simple rack and stack and final ports map followed by a couple of hours remote troubleshooting to ensure our client was fully online and all devices visible.

5. Our skilled engineers ensured that this fast paced high security job was carried out in a timely and professional fashion.

Data Centres aren’t exactly glamorous but it can be nice to swing by the sunny climes of Gibraltar and Spain once in a while !

After the job was completed, this client usually has our engineers on standby for 24 hours or one full working day in case any problems arise or they require any further patching and this time it was no different.

Once this was completed, our team were back on the road and even took in a bit of sightseeing on the way back – admiring the beautiful Norman Foster creation – the Millau Bridge. What a sight to behold!

Case Study: Crédit Agricole Bretagne Onsite Data Erasure

CLIENT OVERVIEW

Crédit Agricole “The Green Bank” is the second largest bank in France with 39 independent regional banks across France and 9,500 branches globally. The operation is a large one and naturally their data centre estate is significant.

THE CHALLENGE

DataMove were approached to help facilitate a data hall upgrade and disposal as well as secure onsite data erasure prior to activities starting. Due to staff shortages and a tight timescale with their new data hall going live, these activities needed to take place between Christmas and New Year.

DEPLOYMENT

Project Managers Andy and Tony worked together to deploy a crew, planning to travel overnight from Portsmouth to Caen on Boxing Day Evening and arriving ready to work onsite on 28th December equipped with our mobile erasure rigs, shredder (as a backup) and a fully equipped team of three engineers. The plan was to finalise erasure before returning for New Years celebrations and continuing with disposal and migration in the first week of the new year.

The six racks of Hitachi Virtual Storage Platform each containing hundreds of high capacity disks were erased using one of our three mobile Blancco rigs – designed from the ground up to be deployable within hours and able to erase hundreds of disks a day.

Being lightweight and flightcase based – we are able to express transport by Sprinter Van or even Airfreight these powerful server based rigs to our client sites globally.

With 24 hour access being issued to us by the client, our engineers were able to work in two shifts and have over 1,800 drives erased in just two days. Our rigs contain three powerful Dell servers communicating via PERC H800 cards and operating on their own temporary network, each capable of erasing hundreds of drives at a time. Any failed drives were pulled and marked and then securely erased and accounted for in our asset disposition reports. Blancco certificates are issued physically and digitally onsite.

OUTCOME

Our team were able to complete the clients data erasure requirements within the time threshold and at a tricky time of year.

The speed and accuracy of our project managers ability to fulfil the job is testament to the versatility of our engineering team and the flexibility of our modular onsite equipment that we have designed with the job – and the job only – in mind.

Our engineers even managed to stop by the Normandy beach memorial on their way back to the ferry port to pay their respects and reflect on the hardships others have suffered for our benefits.
